About the course

Our introductory courses will provide you with the essential skills for walking in the winter hills.

Designed for summer hill walkers or those looking to extend and brush up their experiences into the winter months.

Core skills that may be covered are:

  • Necessary equipment and how to use it
  • Essential foot work
  • Ice axe and crampon use
  • Snow pack analysis, avalanche avoidance and emergency response
  • Winter navigation skills
  • Self-arrest techniques

When possible on these courses, we may use the uplift at the Glencoe Ski Resort or Nevis Range to access the snow and higher mountain areas to maximise your time in the snow line . If we use the chair lift there is a small additional cost.

The courses can be one to five days long. Two days offers you time to put all the theory and skills into practice whilst ascending fabulous summits, and five days gives more time for Munro bagging and becoming an independent and confident winter walker.
